Skye Photographic Workshops
Saturday 13th March 2010 to Saturday 20th March 2010
Fully Booked - Please contact me to register your interest for future Skye workshops
INTRODUCTION:
The Isle of Skye is the most well known of the Hebridean Islands. It is joined to the mainland by the Skye Bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh. Skye is renowned for its spectacular scenery, vibrant culture and heritage, as well as its abundant wildlife which includes the Golden Eagle, White-tailed Sea Eagle, Red Deer and the Otter.
The island is almost 120km long yet no part of the land is more than 10km from the sea due to its deeply jagged coastline. The Black Cuillin range includes 12 Munros and provide some of the most dramatic and challenging mountain terrain in Scotland. As well as a rich heritage of ancient monuments, castles, and memorials, Skye also has other fascinating landscapes (notably around the Quiraing on Trotternish) as well as many stunning coastal features.

THE WORKSHOP:
The session commences at 4pm on Saturday 13th March 2010 and ends at 10am on Saturday 20th March 2010. It is aimed primarily for beginner DSLR users who are looking to learn about landscape photography while getting the best out of their equipment. It is also ideal for intermediates who may wish to improve on their existing skills while experiencing new photographic locations.
The trip will include daily photographic excursions to a variety of stunning locations on the Isle of Skye with shoots concentrated around the hours of sunrise and sunset. Overall the course will be quite intensive and will involve moderate walks therefore a good level of fitness will be required. While in the field I can offer practical advice regarding composition, camera settings, and getting the best from filters.
The hours in the middle of the day shall take a more flexible approach featuring a combination of additional shoots in the field (if the light is favourable), sessions with photoshop aimed at improving post processing workflows, discussions regarding composition and technique, open sessions for constructive criticism, and also time to chill and relax.
Our base for the duration of the trip will be in private and modern 4-bedroom accommodation which features a large lounge and comfortable all round facilities. It is situated in the middle of the island near Sligachan, therefore the majority of the key photographic locations are within an hours drive.
The workshop is self catering to allow for greater flexibility. We can dine out as a group in the evenings (Portree is about 15-20 minutes away, and there are couple of pubs in closer proximity), or alternatively participants can choose to make use of the facilities onsite.

FAQ:
What's included in the price?
- Accomodation, tuition, and transport around the island to photographic locations.
What's not included in the price?
- Insurance, meals, transfers to and from Skye.
What camera equipment is recommended?
- There is no real need to spend a fortune on gear for this trip however I feel that participants would benefit greatly from a sturdy tripod, a remote cable release, a weatherproof camera bag, at least one lens with a focal range between 18-55mm, and plenty of memory cards.
What clothing is required?
- The weather on Skye is very unpredictable in March therefore warm and weatherproof clothing is an absolute must. Sturdy and waterproof footwear with good support around the ankles is also essential as we will be walking over a variety of terrain.
How intensive will the excursions be?
- In order to catch sunrises we will be on site, prepped and ready to shoot for approximately 6am. Taking into account driving times from base, this means that very early rises may be required! In addition there is scope for a number of moderate daytime walks across a variety of terrain (including defined paths, steep rocky sections, boggy ground and rocky shores). Some walks may take over an hour to reach the destination and will involve ascents up to nearly 1000ft (e.g. The Old Man of Storr).
What's in the itinery?
- The itinery will ultimately evolve depending on the conditions that present themselves to us during the week however we will aim to cover some of the most famous locations on the island e.g. Elgol, The Quiraing, Neist Point, Sligachan and more. We will visit these locations at optimal times of the day when the lighting is at its best (if the weather is kind to us!). I also aim to be flexible enough to revisit locations if requested, and if the group is in agreement. Away from the field there will be plenty of scope for indoor sessions covering aspects of composition, technique, photoshop work and open critique.
How do I book?
- A deposit of £50 is required to secure your place on the workshop with the outstanding balance payable 6 weeks prior to the tour date. Please contact me to request a booking form. All terms and conditions will be specified on the form.
Can I extend my stay on the island?
- I appreciate that participants may wish to arrive on the island prior to the workshop commencing, or alternatively extend their stay on the island afterwards. I can personally recommend a selection of quality B&Bs nearby.
Anything else?
- If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact me.

TESTIMONIALS:
Andrew Tobin - http://www.tobinators.com
"I had my most memorable photographic experience ever as a guest of David Kendal on Skye. He organised a very comprehensive tour of the island taking in all the key spots and a number of others that I didn't know existed. A number of the images I took there are hanging on the walls of my house. David is adept both as a photographer and a guide, and I cant wait to get back for my next dose."

"Thanks Dave for organising a wonderful few days in Skye. I was amazed at the detail in planning you put in and at the beautiful locations you found us. Particularily impressive was your ability to alter the plan dependant on the prevailing light and weather conditions. That's something that a novice to landscape photography, like me, would have had to learn the hard way! Anyway, great job and keep me informed of any future trips"
